Converting a small gloomy kitchen into a beautiful and stunning open-plan space.

We were tasked with renovating a small, gloomy kitchen that suffered from poor lighting due to a tiny window. The objective was to transform this cramped space into a large, open-plan kitchen and entertaining area by knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the adjacent room.

The adjacent room, despite having a large window was also dark and uninviting. The customer wanted a lot more light into the space, we decided wew would replace the small kitchen window with something much larger and replace the current window with a triple sliding door. This would allow for a lot more light to enter the space and also provide a great view of the garden.

The first task was to remove the wall between the kitchen and the adjacent room, fortunetley this was not a supporting wall so it was a relatively simple task.

Now it was time to install the new window and triple doors. As the openings would be wider than the current ones we had to install steel beams to support the weight of the wall above. We also removed the the unwanted outhouse to make more space for the garden.

The customer wanted the fireplace restored to its original state. Since the gas fire had been disconnected a long time ago, removing it was relatively simple. We then resized the fireplace to its original dimensions, uncovering a stunning Victorian fireplace in the process.

With the structural work complete, it was time to bring the room to life. The walls were fitted with plasterboard and plastered, creating a smooth and clean canvas. The electrics were designed and installed to ensure that all appliance cabling, including surround sound speaker wires, were concealed within the walls, resulting in a seamless and uncluttered finish.

We now had some real measurements to work with so it was time to design and fit the kitchen. Our customer really wanted a large breakfast bar so we designed a kitchen that would allow for this. The kitchen was fitted with a large island, which houses the washer, dishwasher, cupboards, and a breakfast bar that could seat up to four or five people. The kitchen was finished with a stunning american oak worktop.

It was time to return to the fireplace and restore it to its former glory. We made use of some unwanted stone flags from the garden to create the new hearth, cleaned up the walls and repointed the brickwork. Off cuts from the oak worktops were used to create new shelves either side of the chimney breast.A small floor cupboard was also created to house the surround sound system and TV cabling.

The finishing touch came in the form of a custom made light fitting, we found an old railway sleeper at a local reclamation yard and cut it into two halves. The first sleeper was fixed to the ceiling and the second was hung from the first by chains. The wiring was cleverly concealed within the sleeper and the light was fitted with LED bulbs. The result was a stunning and unique light fitting that really finished the look of the room.
